Hanna vs API

Which one should I believe In?

I have an API and every time I tested ammonia I had a hard time reading it since it was between 0ppm and .25ppm. So I bought a Hanna Checker for a more "œaccurate" reading and first it was reading .7ppm and today it was reading 2.0ppm while API was reading 0 to .25ppm.

Fish look fine. Do you think I got a defective one or which one should I believe in?

I tested for ammonia before I put fish in. After that there isn't really any need barring a catastrophe. If you have fish in, and doing fine, there should me no ammonia …

are you sure the hanna is good for salt water ?...if you have the HI700...it's for fresh water

The API ammonia test is not good, it generally reads 0.25 even when your level is flat 0.
I've never tried that Hanna checker, and don't know anyone who uses it.
Looking at it's spec page, though, it's not at all appropriate for this application.
Although the resolution is 0.1 ppm, it's accuracy is only +- 1 ppm! Meaning it could say 1 ppm when it's actually 0.
I like the Red Sea ammonia test. It's accurate enough and 0 is 0.
The Seachem Ammonia Badge is also fine and there should be one in every QT, imo.

I'm going to buy the Red Sea Ammonia and we'll see what it reads.

i wouldn't trust any API test as far as i could throw them. they're OK in a pinch for getting a ballpark on a new tank, but not something i would rely on.

Red Sea, SeaChem, Hannah, etc.. are a lot better.

API for Alkalinity,Hanna for anything else....

After reading on the Hanna website and a few other threads it looks like the Hanna ammonia test kit doesn't work for saltwater.

My LFS didn't have the Red Sea so I bought the Salifert ammonia test kit and it read 0 ammonia.

Salifert - 0ppm
API - 0ppm
Hanna - 2.0ppm

My fish look normal so I'm leaning towards 0ppm.

You are almost certainly at 0.0ppm. 2ppm would cause some damage. FWIW I run Red Sea calcium, salifert mag and nitrate, Hanna for phosphate and alk. I don’t test anything else.

Right now I have
Salifert for ammonia
Red Sea for Alk, Calcium and Mag
Hanna for phosphates

Everything else with API.

I'll probably be getting the Hanna Alk and Red Sea nitrate.
