About a year ago, I bought 2 Griessinger gobies. Those who knew better (thanks Dave and Danny) told me ... "Go ahead and put them in your tank. You'll never see them again."
Sure enough ... they're incredibly shy. Throughout the last year, I see one maybe once a month and he jumps back to hide if I move anywhere near the tank to get a better look. Any time I see one, I stare and stare hoping to get a glimpse of the other to see if there are two still alive and had pretty well concluded that only one made it.
Recently I lost the last of the large fish in this 24 gallon. On Tuesday, I went into Kermits and got a Rainford's goby, a Redhead, and a little zebra goby for the tank. Then at Memfish, found a little neon goby to add. I've learned my lesson trying to have big fish in a small tank and went the opposite extreme.
Well ever since all those little fish are in the tank, I'm seeing the Griessinger ALL THE TIME! I don't know if it's because he's trying to defend territory, if he's curious, or just figures ... well there's other little fish out there and nothing is happening to them so maybe I can come out, too.
Tonight, for the first time in a YEAR, both Griessingers are out together!!! They're both still alive! I'm SO excited! One is much bigger and has more spots. The other is smaller. The big one looked like he was dancing for the other one and was waggling, waving his fins and popping his long dorsal fin up and down even more than usual for the way they swim. I think they're a pair the way they're moving with each other.
I was so awestruck watching that I didn't think to get my camera. And even so, I'd be so afraid to scare them with the flash. Will DEFINITELY need to capture this on film some how.
Just saw them out again and it is definitely spawning behavior. This is soooooo coool!
Here is a pic I took of one of them while acclimating before I put it in the tank:
