While moving rocks i killed one of my harlequin shrimp. i am down to one. im not sure if its the male or female. now this may sound like a dumb question but i go out and buy another one will they fight if they are the same sex? or will one change to the opposite sex? will they pair always or no?

They will fight if same sex.
Luckily for you, sexing them is not that difficult. If you look at the pleopods of the shrimp (what they paddle/swim with), the female will have bluish purple dots, and the male will just be clear.

This is the only accurate method, some people (like my LFS) think blue = female, pink = male, but this is simply not true as they are very colormorphic.
