Has anyone tried using halogen lamps?

I've been told these lights are bad because they promote algae growth. So in theory, wouldn't they be perfect for a macroalgae tank?

I think the halogens you're refering to are too yellow. Not sure about microalgae growth, but they dont work very well for macros.

That's too bad. They are so much cheaper.

They may be cheap, but they waste alot of energy producing heat.

The lights suggested by Dustin are a good alternative.

Really? These too?

Those work too, but are a little dim IMO for good growth. Make sure you get the right kelvin. As close to 6500k as possible.

I use 2 - 50w Halogena Lamps, made by philips, picked them up at HD, they are over Chaeto in a 10Gal. Refug. I was told they wouldnt work, but they seem to be working for me, I have been growing chaeto for 1 month with the 2 lamps, they are 4-5 inches off the water, and they do get hot, but there is no way for water to splash them, I will have to get a pic.

100 watts is alot of power usage to grow cheato in a 10 gal tank IMO. I've got 85 watts PC over a 35 gal and my cheato is doubling its size in under 2 weeks. I remove about a football size chunk every two weeks.
