Has anyone used reactor media as a substrate?

Was thinking of doing something like the reborn media in the tank or sump? Anyone done this? Any input would be great!

Gonna go with a big NO on this one. Media is usually designed to remove things you don't want in the tank. Why would you want it in there permanently?

Reborn is just crushed coral. It's just like buying live rock rubble and placing it at the bottom of the tank. If you like the look, it wouldn't be any different than that except probably cost you more than rock rubble.

I actually considered this myself with the reborn media, as I like the shape of it.. But the two reasons I haven't was my tank size and mostly the cost associated with doing that.. But yes, if you have the coin, it will be a different look.. A cool one I think..

Neptune does this on several of their display tanks, would definitely be worth checking out. Personally I wouldnt do it though since I like shrimp goby pairs.

I have seen that as well. Definitely a different look and I could see doing that. What is your goal in doing this? Is it that you don't want sand blowing around and don't like the bare bottom look?

Neptune also has a crew which maintains the tanks daily, not say it wouldn't work just might be there because it's easier to siphon out crap when they got guys doing water changes and what not.

Make sure to monitor your nitrates if you proceed...

Ever since we made the switch from sand to Aragonite media with our first experiment, started with our 100% SPS dominated tank, we noticed the Nitrate drops significantly and about two months later, ALL the hair algae died. Now, ALL of our displays are switched over to Aragonite media.

Our primary reasons for using Aragonite media was because we needed additional biological support since the Real Reef rocks we used weren't porous enough to do that. In addition, the Aragonite media bed also works excellent as a grow substrate for coral fragments. And finally, it's works better for high flow condition to prevent sand storm in the tank.

Great info everyone and thank you!

I ordered a 50# bag of it and will try it out.

I have heard mostly positive and little to no negative on doing this change.

I am most concerned about waste getting caught up in the coarse media.
