I used to have it in my return. but you have to keep it clean or else it will restrict the water flow

depending on the flow through your CL, you may be restricting the flow even when clean.

CL usually high flow. This seems like a high pressure/ low flow application (think drain). Search for something with larger holes.

i use it for my CL but i have two 1.5" holes to feed a 1 inch fitting in my pump. couple of reasons i have 2 holes: don't want to restrict flow and also suction force dispersion.

cool looking strainer but doesn't really matter cuz its under my rock work. i paid a lot more that what you have posted so it may be worth it. i wouldn't buy it again for what i paid for it. i'd just buy the cone shaped strainers.
