They work if the return is strong enough.

Doesnt give you more flow, its like putting your thumb over the hose. The water shoots farther and more direct but its not extra flow. It would be the same to use some of the loc line adapters

I would agree with kraze3. Most power heads come with a form of water diverter that snap onto the output.

Eductors/Penductors actually are pretty nice, but do require a beefy pump to run. They work by pushing the high pressure water around a special input device to pull in tank water from the end of the device, moving a lot of tank + pump water in the process.
