Having Scratches Fixed

Hi -

I have a new tank which I'd rather not ship back for fixing, which has a 6" scratch on the inside. The tank builders (who will remain anonymous because they're handing this great and I'm not upset with them) would like me to have a window scratch company attempt to fix before looking at shipping me a replacement tank.

Do you guys think that a graffiti removal company will be able to grind down the glass (low iron specialty glass, of course) and repair the scratch without leaving any visible waves where the thickness changes? They claim they can - but as I'm sure anyone would be I'm a little concerned since I've spent quite a lot of money on the tank and it's brand new..

Mostly looking for moral support.. and maybe some of you have had scratches removed from glass (or done it yourself) and can give me a realistic expectation of results.

I'm assuming they're paying for the scratch removal? If so maybe find a good company that have examples of their work and give it a try with the understanding that if you're not happy afterwards, they'll still exchange the tank. I've never had it done, but since it's close to the edge anyway, you'll probably not notice anything.

I'd just be worried that the scratch removal company might inadvertently damage the silicone on the seam.

I suppose if it can be done on acrylic tanks, it will work properly on glass tanks, correct? The tank company is willing to pay the fee to have it repaired (around $250).

Additionally, the glass company wants to trim the silicone (not remove the front panel) to give some more working space, and then they're planning on replacing it. The tank company is sending a tube of silicone to use, in fact. I've also verified that if this is all done, my warranty is still in place..

The scratches are not deep according to the glass company.. barely catching your fingernail.
