Hawaii and rock

No live rock may be taken. It is a gallon of sand and rubble not for commercial use...

I am planning on looking for dry rock.

As long as it's dry rock, you should be fine. I'd check it in instead of hand carrying it though. :)

No surprise that each person "in the know" at security will give you a different answer depending on who you ask.
Like I said, I asked the guy that was working at the time I went through and he said it was no problem with my dry rock.
I definately had more than one gallon of displacement worth and some was checked (larger) and some was carry on (smaller).
This was March of this year.

TSA won't know anything about DLNR restrictions on rock collecting. They're just concerned about whether you're bringing aboard a threat onto the plane. And depending on the TSA screener, they may have an issue with the rock or not (e.g. you could theoretically knock somebody upside the head with the rock :)). Even Ag inspectors are more geared towards checking for fruit/plants being taken out and won't be paying attention to rock unless you've got somebody really savvy.

FWIW.

Spleen

Take a picture book of your tank with you. Show all the TSA why you have the rock. All the TSA people I've met are super nice.

Like others have said, they are only looking for threats to the passengers and crew.

I am home with my rock! I had no trouble at all with the Ag. screeners and none checking it in.

Jeff, thanks for the tip as to where to go. We had to go to an area near where you got yours. According to my son who lives there, this is not a place any tourist would want to go. Not the friendliest people to outsiders there. We went in and out in one trip.

Everyone on the island was very nice but like all cities there are just some areas that are better left off of your tour. All in all, I had the time of my life! Even ate sashimi! (while watching fish which was kinda weird.)

It's not THAT bad. There's actually some beautiful areas on that side of the island including an area where you can swim with wild spinner dolphins in the morning. The level of friendliness depends on the person, like anywhere else ... but admit that of all the areas on the island, it's probably the least receptive to outsiders.

Glad to hear that you made it home OK with the rock!

FWIW, i used to screen the hires for TSA. Just tell them what it is for. and if they give you a hard time, just check it.

Lucky you! i have always wanted to go to hawai'i

I did check it and it went thru the Ag inspection just fine. No one said a word about it.

Spleen, do you live there?

As a matter of fact, yes, and not too far from the Ko Olina marina that someone posted about on this thread. :)

Spleen

Lucky you! I keep asking my son if he wants me to come live with him but funny thing...he keeps saying no.

Where we went to get the rocks, there was sort of a tent city. The area was beautiful. It was near the golf course and the high dollar condos. Wait, that would be any condo on the island. :D
Even though some of the homes around there were kind of unkempt they have character which is way more interesting.

My son is in the navy and I guess there is some resentment of them being there. Also some resentment for "tourists ruining the island." I have seen the same thing from some locals in a lot of resort areas around the world . Can't live with us can't live without us.

It was disheartening to look at an amazing blow hole and see all the trash around it. Unfortunately, that also happens everywhere. But, fresh ahi everyday...I can live with that.

Off the beach is OK. It's illegal to collect any rock that has any visible life on it, however.

then close your eyes when you take off with it.:D or get a friend that dosent know any better.

Sheryl - you wouldn't want to live here - 90% of the stuff that we put in reef tanks is illegal to bring into the state or to collect. We do have nice cheap yellow tangs and flame angels though. :)

Spleen

I guess there is no local reef club here? I just arrived last saturday. I priced live rock already, and when it's availble, it's $9 a pound.

Might make my own or figure something else out.

No reef club. There's the Honolulu Aquarium Society (or some name similar to that) but they concentrate primarily on FW (and some saltwater fish only tanks) from my understanding.

Just out of curiosity, How cheap are they in hawaii?

Small for $7. I'm planning on getting 2-3 of them for my 125 along with 2-3 small blue tangs. Maybe a longnose butterfly as well.
