Heater on all the time?

Morning everyone,

Quick question that I never really thought about... I have a 75 gallon display with 20 gallon sump. I have two heaters... one 150w Aqueon and one 250w Marineland Stealth (older type, no indicator lamp). The Aqueon is just about always on. I'm not sure about the Stealth. My temp is reading between 79 and 81. Is it ok, or normal, for heaters to be running all the time? I suppose if the temp is ok that it's fine, but the thermostat on the Aqueon is messed up. I have it set to 68, and its still always on. Is it worth investing in new heaters?

Replace both heaters with a good quaility heater rated for much more than you need it for. Did you feel the stealth to see if it is even working?

Why gamble with your setup like that? If the contacts stick on one of the haters you are going to cook your tank.

The Aqueon is messed up, "always on" is the usual way they go. Get rid of it before anything else happens.

Everyone is getting scared with stealth heaters now. I have 2 of them in use, so I am being double scared :). Anyhoo, 250w is rated up to 75 gals. Plus heat from lights, plus heat from pumps and powerheads. It probably is better to have 2 smaller ones, but your single 250w heater should be ok.

that is one good reason to get a controller, I run 2 stealth heaters also for over 5 years but they have always been on a ranco temp controller.

So what heaters do you guys recommend?

i have no problems with the stealth but alot of people have complained about them lately.

most prefer either ebo jager's or titanium heaters. either way I still won't run a heater without a controller just for the safty reasons and extra backup.

Cool, I've been in the hobby for a while but never looked into heater controllers. I'll check them out.

Also the Chiefs are going down next week to my Bolts! ;)
