heater protector ?

I am building a seahorse tank and have a question. I have read that seahorses will hitch to anything in their reach. I assume this means they will hitch to my heater too. Will this hurt the seahorse if it gets hot when one os on it? If so, what can I put around the heater element to keep them off ?
