I am thinking about doing a 2000g pond reef outdoors in upstate NY.. Im wondering what the recomendations are for a heater I have acess to 1000w heaters but was thinking with -20 wind chill in the winter heating was going to be an issue

thanks in advance
Brian

The wind chill has little/no effect on anything but our skin. I would guess that you would have to use alot of heaters to keep your outside reef at 77-80 degree's when the outside air temp is -10 degree's.

I was reading just the opposite. In that case wouldn't that make convective cooling ineffective??

Are you serious?

Will it be covered? You will need to know the surface area and depth.

I fugure the chance of failure is very high.

If this is a reef outside your nuts IMHO

not to say it couldn't be done, but you would need a gas furnace like a pool system and the cost would be ridiculus. If you were to enclose it then things would change.

A pond would be different, it wouldn't need heated as long as you have good flow to keep ice from forming. However I wouldn't recommend feeding the fish below 50 degrees, just something I learned from experience and FWIW.

Good luck with your endeavor as I believe you will come back to your senses with the first gas bill.:D

:) :) that is me !!! to the "T"

Im thinking that greenhouse effect in the winter. I know anthony calfo has a huge prop system outdoors in a greenhouse and keeps it going in the winter.

thanks for all of your help!

Open to the air would be insane.

One question though why only 2000 gallons, you can do a pretty big hole with a back hoe in no time at all

Just kick it up a notch and go for 4,000 the pumps won't be that much more.

BTW my 8,000g pond is 6.5' deep and 28' long by 14' wide it's sloped a couple times but if it was completely dug out would be around 12,000.

Have you thought of getting an inground swimming pool/reef

That would be my dream system so I could scuba dive with my fish:D :D
