Heaters

Does anyone have any 250w and up heaters for sale? Heater broke and seeing if anybody has any used ones before going to buy new. Trade is possible as well. thanks.

Heaters are one of those relatively inexpensive things that are highly critical in the aquarium. I'd just get a brand new one that is known to be reliable. The last thing I'd want with winter ahead, is a heater of unknown history etc.

I personally like the Marineland Visi-Therm stealth heaters

just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Also, a heater controller is a (IMO) very good investment. Those internal thermostats on basically all heaters, are prone to failure. Sticking on could wipe your tank.

I use a Neptune Apex which controls my tank, but there are also much cheaper solutions like the digital aquatics Reef keeper light (basic)

I agree on the controller if possible for anyone. By far the best investment in my tank. AquaController III

+1 on buying brand new.

Google "stealth heater exploded" before going this route.

+1 on using a controller

Jager heaters get a lot of positive reviews, and seem very well built:

Hey ed whats up I have a whole garage full of fish stuff hit me up pm me or call me 459-9806..Im sure i have at least three heaters....guys btw ed is not in a real rush on this his tank is 180 gallon acrylic (very well insulated ) and is running 250hqis.. not a lot of heat loss or gain ...

I did some research on this and would like to share.

Jagers are not what they used to be. I have two that both leaked and died. Didn't use for more than a few years. On the other hand, older models seem to last decades. That seems to be the consensus online.

I settled on the new Stealth Pros. Sure, older models have been known to melt. So, I limited myself to 25W and 50W heaters at about 1W/gallon. It's enough to lift the tank temperature a few degrees, which is all I need. Lamps and pumps provide most of the heat, and the heater serves to just stabilize the temperature.

The other important trick (especially with Jagers) is to not completely submerge the heaters and keep the heads above water. It's troublesome but should virtually eliminate leaking.
