This crab hitched on one of my recently bought LR. Can someone please ID this thing and is it reef safe? Planning on adding corals in the future but waiting for the tank to settle in for several more months.
Yeah, it fits into the majid group. To get an id we'd have to know where it came from (geographic region, not LFS ) and get a good body shot of it with the sponge stripped off. Many of the small majids & decorators appear to have a high proportion of algae along with some small inverts in their diets so this one may be relatively harmless. Since crabs do have individual feeding preferences you'll need to keep an eye on it to make sure it really does leave your corals alone.
thanks....I'll try to take him out so I can take a clear picture of it. For some reason when I take a pic of my tank with the camera...it comes out blurry. I talked to one of the guys at the LFS I got it from and from the sound of it...he said it was some kind of decortive crab which may not be reef safe. Who know's untill I positively id this thing. Thanks again
Ok...here some more pics of him out of the water. Sorry I didn't want to strip him naked even though he killed my evergreen starburst polyp...thats what he's wearing. So I assume he's not reef safe. But now to ID this thing.
