Hi RC! After months of reading around the forums I've finally decided to get a custom 30 gal sumpless glass cube built, and I have a question for you guys, should i choose tinted glass or black acrylic for the back wall that separates the filtration compartment? The guy who's building the tank said there would be almost no difference in cost, and if I choose glass the overflow height would be adjustable but since amost every tank in this style that I see has acrylic for the back wall i figured i better ask the experts. So what would you guys do?

i like the look of acrylic more for the back but if the rest of the tank is glass id go for glass to not have a weird bond, its better to have one material for the whole tank. make sure the tint is as close to 100% as possible and im sure you'll like it.

The reason most all-in-one tanks use acrylic for the back wall is that it's considerably cheaper to manufacture, particularly if the filtration wall has features like built-in overflow weirs and the like.

Glass has the advantage that it's easy to clean with a metal blade, whereas acrylic would be badly scratched by such an implement. It is, however, possible to polish acrylic when it does get scratched, whereas this isn't feasible with glass.
