Help! Benthic algae coating the sand bed!

The tank is a 90 gallon reef with a 55 gallon ex-refugium. I call it an ex-refugium because when the hurricane problem blew through a few years ago, we lost power and our wonderful field of macroalgae passed away. When it was re-started, someone decided to put a Condylactis in it and now it's more like a coral growout tank. It's a Berlin system though, so the sand bed is about 5 inches deep in the ex-refugium, and 3 to 4 in the 90 gallon main tank. Also on the tank: Coralife Super Skimmer Needle Wheel (big one?), PhosBan reactor with PhosBan media, and two powerheads in addition to the return pump. No complaints in the main tank... just the 55 ex-fuge... keep reading...

Anyhow, in addition to a slew of regular issues, we had a recent flatworm outbreak in the 55. It's funny that it didn't spread to the attached 90, but it didn't. A sixline wrasse was purchased, knowing full well that it might not be able to handle the problem, but we had a home for it anyways. Well it was mowin' them down, but not enough, so we got Salifert's Flatworm eXit and cut off circulation to the 90 gallon. We treated with the proper dosage, and used a brand new PhosBan Reactor filled with GAC to cycle through after the treatment. The water looks cleaner than ever, butttt now there's some brown algae growing in there, in addition to a red slime outbreak... The refugium is running on 4 PC's - two white ones and two actinics. The brown algae is your typical single cell colonial stuff. How do I get rid of it?! I'm thinking the lights MIGHT be old... but the thing with the cleaner water and the MORE algae confuses me. Does anyone know whats going on? If you have any more questions, ask, because I'm in a lab and people are distracting me... Um... thanks!
