Hello guys! I have been trying to catch a Miniatus Grouper in my 180 FOWLR without no success for the past 2 days:mad: . I've tried all sorts of trap and he's just too smart. My problem is that I have over 250LBS of live rock in the tank and it just makes it even harder. Any ideas?

I've always liked using the trap method with a mirror behind it. He'll see his refecltion and cant help but go after it.

Sounds interesting, please elaborate. Thanks!

They sell barb-less hooks at your local fish and game store.

I rigged up my own fishing pole (still have it :D) to catch a miniatus before. Just a decent size wooden dowel (Home Depot) some fishing line and barbless hook (Sweeney's Sporting Goods) and a nice piece of krill (freezer) = <$5. When he bites just set the hook and yank him out in pretty much the same motion.

He was eating in a holding tank less than 30 min. later! so i would say it did not harm him.

I used a HOB fuge (19"2.5"x8" maybe?) and had a mirror behind it. The fish saw it's reflection, and went for it. Since most fish are territorial, they will go after it. I am sure your miniatus will go for it no problem. If for some reason it doesn't work, the hook line and sinker is your best bet with a grouper.

catching a minuatus is very very easy....let him get hungary...
and use a piece of squid or his favorite food put it in when its half frozen....have your net ready and when he makes the lunge then trow that net in and youll have him bagged up in no time. Thats what I did with mine.
are you selling it?

This was gonna be my next option. Thanks!

I tried the mirror thing , but it didn't work:( . He's too damn smart I guess; he's been caught before so I guess he isn't that dumb anymore:D .

He's too fast, trust me when I say this. I actually sold him to a friend to mine.

Got him....Closed up half of the tank with the top from a 30g rubbermaid bin, removed all the rocks on that side and caught him.

Glad to see you caught him safely. That also has been a great method, but requires you to move rock around. Why did you get rid of him? They are great fish, miss my old one!

He was cool when small, but once he started growing he became more and more agressive. Last night he tried to eat a $150 meal (Acanthurus Bariene) and that just did it. He's going into a 150 FOWLR that a friend of mine has, so he'll be fine there.
