[help] Chiller on the fritz

Hey ya'll! Having a weird issue with my 1/4 hp JBJ Arctica, wondering if any of you have experienced anything similar.

Here's what's happening: I have the thermostat on the chiller set at 81.5. Today was a nice day so I opened all the windows to the house and didn't run the AC, and the tank got up to 82 -- no biggie. So the chiller turns on, the compressor does it's thing, everything like normal except, as soon as the thermostat changes from 82 degrees to 81.9, the digital readout starts dropping extremely fast. Within 15 seconds, it's reading 65 degrees. I know that this is a malfunction, My AquaController is till reading 82, but once the JBJ no longer reads a high water temp, it shuts down, effectively rendering my unit useless.

I believe the unit to be 6-8 years old (I bought it second hand off the forums here, had it myself for ~4yrs.) It's been awesome, never had any issues. Which, unfortunately, also means that I never really thought too much about doing regular service or maintenance...

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm going to pull it out and do some service, but unfortunately it's kinda wedged into a difficult to access area of my stand, so it's more of a project than it would be otherwise. I don't know if that alone will solve the issue, or if I need to replace the circuit board...:rolleye1:

Thanks for the help!

Guessing the temperature control. You can take it to jbj and they'll diagnose it and switch it out if it is. I think it's ~$100 if it is. 6-8 yrs is great use out of it. There's also a temp probe that can go out to. I think that's about $30

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

Good to know I can take it in, also. What sucks, though, is that I'm about to leave town for a few days for my wife's birthday, and the forecast says it'll be in the 90's this weekend...:worried::worried:

Guess I'm leaving the AC on and rigging up some fans in the meantime!

Oh, is see. I have the 1/10 hp version. Could you just set it as low as possible, but let the controller kill the outlet? Fans may end up being your friend. A few days with Zero lights are not nearly as bad as high temps, IMO
Here in Nor Cal we'll be 85°, so I see what you're facing...

I didn't even think about the lights. I still have a temp cutoff programmed on my AC3 from when I ran Metal Halides, so my LED's will turn off if the temp gets too hot too, but maybe I should disable that before I go.

Thanks!

I have an older 1/2 hp that the temp controller went out. I bypassed it so it turns on when you plug it in. I have it controlled by the Apex.

Is bypassing it a pretty easy thing to do? I have the manual with all the diagrams. If you're right and I could run it like you say, I think that would be ideal!
