Help! Do my fish have ich???

My purple tang has some white spots on him. I thought it might have been sand at one point, some of it definitely was as I watched him pick through the sand and some stick to him, but I think it only being sand was wishful thinking on my part. Also there are a lot of pods crawling around on my glass, not sure if that matters. Now I'm noticing white spots on my puffers fins too. They're the only fish in the tank and both are eating anything I feed them, thinking I might be setting up a QT tank this week though. What do you think from the pictures? plan of action if this was your tank?

Thanks.

Pictures not clear. Behavior of fish? History of fish?

The fish are acting perfectly healthy besides the spots. I might have seen the tang scratch once this morning but I wasn't sure. I've had the tang for a month and the puffer for three weeks. Neither was QTed, kicking myself for skipping this step when getting back into the hobby. The spots seem to be stressing me out more than the fish at this point, though.

Ok, so I'm gonna buy a system to QT these guys. If they're gonna be in there for a couple of month I want them to be as comfortable as possible. I'm thinking maybe like a 40 gallon tank? The purple tang has shown some aggressive towards the puffer so I want a good amount of hiding places, is there any reason not to have a bunch of different PVC pieces in the tank?

I have a sponge filter in my sump as I was planning on setting up a Qt anyways, is that going to be sufficient filtration for that length of time? Man this sucks :(

I would set up your 40g with a new power filter, seed it with bacteria in a bottle and a couple of drops of ammonia to jump start your cycle. Don't use that sponge filter from your sump, it may contain ich. Borrow or buy two 20 gal tanks to do do "tank transfer method" and then transfer them to your 40g cycled tank with PVC pipes for fish to cut down on aggression for 60+ days. You want to let your DT go fallow for 72 days. TTT-12 days + observation 60 days.

I'm planning on using copper, would the sponge filter still be a bad idea if I do that?
