Well today I woke up to Hydroids on my glass. There are a bunch of them.

I was hoping someone could shed some light on exactly what these things do or what problems they may cause me. Also, If anyone has any suggesstions on how to get rid of them I would really appreciate it.

Those are some really nice pics of them. I've had them, I didn't do anything, and they went away on their own. I don't think that they will cause any problems, but don't take my word on that. :)

I often see those on the glass of my tank and usually end up knocking them down with a Mag Float. I don't believe those cause any harm.

Great pictures!

Thanks guys! I did a bit of research after posting this and basically I read the same things you guys are saying...Pretty much harmless. Knowing that makes them much cooler looking.

Thanks for all the responses!!

this site is awesome!!!! I just started noticing these same things in my newest tank, so now I don't have to freak out:) Never seen them before, but like you, now I don't mind seeing them at all!

In that stage they are harmless.

If they survive they will start to grow on your live rock in a small colony. They look like very small brown featherdusters (about 2mm across). I've read they can sting other corals but honestly I've got them in my nano and haven't had any problems.

You can kill them with kalk paste but they are hard to completely eliminate.

Heres a few with my conch. My tank is about 5 years old and I still got em.I have a few of the ones that look like featherdusters, they're away from corals so I let them be.I used a nylon brush on a couple of patches and they haven't come back.

I agree with Theop, in the medusa stage they are not harmless but when they colonize and start to look like mini anthellia they become dangerous FME

BTW I wouldnt think a nylon brush would do anything but help them spread. I would keep an eye out for them in areas of low flow. Some CBB will eat them and if I am not mistaken a Purple Dragon Nudi will eat them too although they are almost non-existant in the trade. Reefermadness sells a nudi that they claim eats them but I dont know whether that is true or not.

The nylon brush thing intrigues me. Maybe you are supposed to push the bristles of the brush into their tube thereby killing them?

I've had some success squirting them with kalk paste and then injecting some into the tube when they withdraw. But it's had to inject every one.

Andrewr,
What's a CBB? I have then all over my rocks in one tank and can't eliminate them.
