ive got something going on with my tank, noticed it on my hippo, then purple tang, now the fins of my saddle puffer and side fins on my naso. is it ich? ive tried to take a couple pics, it just looks like gunk on their fins, not white balls or fuzzy patches. the purple tang im hoping is shedding more or less, and getting over it. its starting to look like its on the sides of the naso too, the hippo has it all over its body. not big white salt chunks like ich that im accustomed to. my regal angel looks like he has a faint white haze to him too, he quit eating this morning too. he acts normal so far. i am treating with copper now, thinking it was ich before but now im wondering if it's a fungus instead. help!! thank you

Hard to tell from the pics, but it could be ich or velvet. Either can be treated with copper, but you shouldn't treat the display tank. The rocks will absorb the copper, making it difficult to maintain a therapeutic dose. Best to move ALL fish to a hospital tank (or tanks) and treat there. You will need to leave your display tank fallow for 8-10 weeks to allow the parasite to die off.

ich or fungus?

ich or fungus?

I've already started to treat the tank with copper. Bit will always be just fish only, I removed all the invertebrates before dosing. I'm seeing it on the side fins of the saddle and Naso, a tad on the naso's body. The whole hippo. HeI was hoping copper was the right direction today and not an anti fungal treatment. What would be the difference? The saddle puffer it started on the fin tips slowly working its way down.

I was hoping with the purples body he was shedding the old parasite layer. It has only been 11 hours since dosing started. I've been watching this for a few days hoping it would run its course. Not so much yet.

What you are seeing with the purple tang is just one part of the cryptocaryon lifecycle. The feed stage will drop off and encyst, creating a larger number of new parasites. Fungal diseases are not common for marine fish. If you are dealing with cryptocaryon (marine ich), you are best served by treating your fish in a dedicated tank. The rock in your DT will 1.) absorb the copper, making it difficult to maintain the appropriate dose and 2.) leach the copper back into the aquarium over time, presenting a hazard to invertebrates that are (re)introduced into the aquarium.

thank you very much for your input, im hoping its ich and the copper will start showing progress. im not sure i could catch everyone, then stressing them, and id have to get a 20 or something bigger to put them in to treat. at this point i guess i'll go ahead in the display tank if i have to i'll replace the rock once things are stable.
