I,ve bought as a Cynarina but imo it looks like Scolymia

Thanks.

What does it look like when its closed?

The color looks like a scoly, but it almost looks like it has the large teeth of a cynarina.

could i ask a favour of the guys that identified this as a scolymia, what was the deciding factor that steered you to scolymia, i have no experience with these type of corals so would be good to know

thanks

Most cynarina are translucent not opaque. They also have a repeating pattern, kinda like a jello mold does. Hope that helps. I do notice Marcio is in Brazil and you are in Scotland. Americans tend to get their corals primarily from the South Pacific. Species can and do vary around the world. So if Marcio is getting coral from off the Brazilian coast and John from the Red Sea, you might be getting different species than we normally see, on any given coral.

If you want my opinion, it looks like a hybrid. The flesh is not right for a cynarina, but the skeleton is not right for a scolymia. Here are some pics:

Scolymia vitiensis:

Scolymia cubensis:

Scolymia australis:

Hi GMAX it actually looks like that Mussa Angulosa despite the colour. In fact the first pics i've posted made it more difficult to id since the coral is not displaying that colour when inflated. I took that first pic when the coral had just came into the tank. I'll post some new pics. Its nothing opaque at all when inflated.

Thanks.
