well the clam finally bite the big one today no more hope 
I also lost a head on the Hammer, and I thought he as looking better
so now I'm up to a monti cap, torch coral, hammer, and CLAM I guess all in all not that bad but wow. let this be a lesson to me and everyone who keeps loose wires around the tank.
Hopefully In a week or two after I get everything settled in the tank I might be able to take a few of you guys up on offers for some replacements.
My biggest question, Is there a test out there for metals? my other params are pretty normal, Nitrates are a little higher than normal but I think within acceptable levels (about 30 PPM there normally around 10-15).
And last is it okay to keep the shell of the clam in the tank as long as I got the meat out of it? it has some zoa's and anthelia on it tha I would like to keep

What are the red corals in your pics. They are really nice looking.
Sorry about your tank problems... As far as the GFI goes (skipped over most the the discussion so I hope I'm not repeating), the GFI will trip if there is more than a 5 milli amp imbalance between the hot and the neutral.
With out a grounding probe, you might have tripped the GFI since some of the current could have found it's way to ground. With a grounding probe you would have most likely tripped the GFI since more of the current would have found it's way to ground.
I personally have everything on a few GFIs. And have grounding probes. Good luck.

I agree with fazgood on the transformer and that goes's for all transformers. Dela is right with the GFI. I don't have a GFI on my main pump because there is plastic isolating it from the water to the motor "magnetic drive". Motors are a leaner load not a resistive which can play havoc on GFI's and can go bad after awhile. I have seen GFI's on HEAVY motor loads go bad in the electrical field to many times and I don't care if I get shocked, I have a good life insurance policy. Voltage leads the amperage on leaner loads not like a resistive loads.

I am the same way I keep most of my system on a gfi plug except for the main pump, the dc transformer was on a gfi and it did not trip for this but it was also plugged into a outdoor timer and I have head if you plug things into a timer then into a GFI that the GFI won't work?

update: the hammer coral has completely bitten it as well last night but everything else is looking pretty good, even the smaller clam. so hopefully the tank is on it's way to recovery and I wont loose anything else.
how often should this poly be changed out? i,ve been dooing it every day.

Gfci outlets trip in two ways. Like mentioned by sensing the difference in the amperage. Or if the ground picks up some current from somewhere.<a href=showthread.php?s=&postid=12081414#post12081414 target=_blank>Originally posted</a> by breutus
I don't think the grounding probe is capable of tripping a GFI in any way, since it doesn't plug into the hot and neutral of the GFI receptacle. At least none that I've ever seen, the only one thats real on the terminal is the ground and a GFI doesn't work off the ground it works off a variance in the hot and neutral... If that makes any since whatsoever lol
The gfci should trip, but it wont turn off the heater if it's not on a protected outlet.
Please make sure you closely monitor for Nitrite and Ammonia with all the death in the tank. Especially snails. If you already know this, I appologize. Glad to see not all was lost.
