Help Me Bring My Reef Back to LIFE!

Recently, I changed out sumps from an under my DT from a 27 gallon cube to a 55 gallon long basement sump. This ended up being a huge project and in all the planning I had done I made what is now looking to be a fairly big mistake. Insead of taking a couple cup fulls of sand from the 10mth old DSB in the fuge and adding it to new sand in the new sump, in haste to get the tank back up and running I scooped out the entire DSB and dumped it into the new fuge. I noticed how cloudy the water was in the new sump and tried to let it settle overnight which really didnt clear it up much. Since my DT was running with only circulation pumps, some carbon, lights and a heater I decided it would be the lesser of two evils to turn on the return and get things circulating through the sump to help it settle. Almost instantly the water in the DT turned a milky white and slowly cleard up throughtout the day. By the time I went to bed I could see all the corals and none of them had any polyp extentsion.

The next morning of day 2 things were fairly clear however, again zero polyp extension from corals. That evening I changed out the carbon, filter sock and checked all parameters which were perfect(detailed below)My Green Birdsnest was showing the tip of polyps as well as my Purple Stylo however, non of my Acro's had any visible polyps. I have a Sprung Stunners Chalice that had tissue sloughing off and even my Bubble Tip Anenome was still detracted, and clams closed.

The morning of Day3 still no polyp extension from the Acro's minimal polyp extension from Birds Nest and Stylo, Chalice showing a bit more tissue had sloughed off and GSP colony was a 1/4 open and fully extended. That evening again changed the filter sock, emptied protein skimmer checked all parameters (again perfect and below). I noticed my Blue Monster Tort is bleached, however the rest of the Acro's have kept most color(I am not used to seeing them with no polyps exteded so not sure if they lost color). The GSP colony is now half open and extended and there is a little better polyp extension on the Purple Stylo and Birdsnest. The Chalice has not really changed since day 2. The clams were fully open as well as the BTA. When the lights went out I target fed all Corals with Reef Chili and amino acids.

The morning of day 4 (today) the lights had not come on befroe I left for work and I didnt really notice much change from the previous evening.

Sorry, for the book but, I felt I needed to give as much detail as a I could. I have learned my lesson and know I am asking for help to bring my corals back to the way they were before this incident. Do I need to feed more especially the bleach Tort? Change around any paremeters, more water changes? I have worked so hard to get where things were at and what I have done to my system is killing me!

I usually feed the corals every other day with Coral Frenzy and/or Reef Chili as well as add a dropper full of Brightwell AA (I know this may seem like a lot but I have been trying to get things to color up and it is working). I went from weekly 5 gallon water changes to bi-weekly 5 gallon because my nitrates and phosphates were undetectable and I felt I was stripping to many nutrients from the water. Below are water parameters each day after turning on the pump as well as system info.

Day 1 (day return pump to new sump was turned on)
Did not check parameters that day. Temp stayed between 77 - 78 and Apex offline so unfortunately no PH info. Did follow usual daily dosing pattern.

Day 2
Ammonia - 0 (API)
Nitrate - 0 (API)
Phosphate - 0 (Salifert, Red Sea)
Cal - 440 (Red Sea)
ALK - 8 (API)
PH - 7.85 - 8 (Apex)
Temp 77.7 - 78

Day 3
Ammonia - 0 (API)
Nitrite - 0 (API)
Nitrate - 0 (API)
Phosphate - 0 (Salifert, Red Sea)
Cal - 440 (Red Sea)
ALK - 8 (API)
PH 7.9 - 8.05
Temp 77.7 - 78

*tested mag 2 weeks prior and at 1400

Not a lot can be done now but track parameters very closely for next few weeks. Does tank have rotten egg smell? Remember you wont have the benefit of a working DSB for a while so maybe lighten up on feedings for a while and keep a close eye for trouble indicators, i.e. diatoms, algae blooms, etc. I wouldn't worry about PE so much right now, it will come back as corals settle back in. The corals that are losing flesh you can try fragging to remove or even sealing edges with glue, do a search and this will come up. If any trouble starts do a few large water changes so maybe have lots of prepared water ready to go. Make sure you have a really good surface exchange for now to help keep tank oxygen level up. Good luck.

No, their is no rotten egg smell or really any smell at all. I put a Koralia at the top of the tank so it is shooting across the surface for more exchange. I also have my skimmer air line drawing air from outside my house so that should also help with O2.

I was a bit bummed when I got home today from work, I was hoping things would have shown some improvement but, if anything things look a little worse. I am not seeing any tissue recession except on the chalice. Many of the SPS have lost color. My favorite coral, Blue Monster Tort is Bleached! The SPS as expected were effected the worst. I guess its a good sign that the clams, anenome, GSP, Torch are almost back to normal. The fish couldnt be happier.

With some bleaching going on I did turn the intensity down a bit on the Radion. I am not sure if this is necessary just thought it might help.

Anyone been in a similar situation and pulled through?

Time and patience. I moved my 150 across town and stirred up all kinds of funk. Some corals were literally upside down because I couldn't place the rock the same way twice. Some bleached, others didn't. You win some, you lose some. A few years later and my tank has never looked better. I ended up losing an oregon tort but actually just found two tiny pieces that have grown back and I was able to frag them and put them on plugs. Time and patience is really all I can say. It sounds like your parameters are in check and you didn't have any ammonia spike that showed up on your tests so that is a good thing.
