Help me choose some stock? :)

Hey everyone! So I have a 40b reef currently inhabited by a snowflake ocellaris, a midas blenny, a peppermint shrimp, a tuxedo urchin, and a few snails and emerald crabs. My question is that I'm looking for another free swimming fish to add some color to my tank, but I don't know what options I have with a 40b as it seems a bit small for things like tangs.

What do YOU have stocked in your 40b? :)

If I am not mistaken, I have read somewhere that LA actually takes the max size of a fish that is on record in a aquarium and base the min requirements for the tank size. Most average fish does not reach that max size.

The question is whether they don't reach that size because we put them in inappropriate aquariums. They also take the fish activity into account. For example they have an Achilles Tang in a 180 gallon at 8.5" and a Blue Tang at 1' in the same size tank. I don't know anything about this flasher in general, I've actually been thinking about setting up a 40 cube and wondering if I could get a flasher.

Though im still building my 40g. My plan is to have 2 clarkii clowns and a yellow tail damsel from my 10g. I will also add a tomani tang and a sand sifting goby as well. I dont really care that the tang is suggested to have 30 more gallons. But thats just my two cents.

The Tomini is rated at 75 and 4ft minimum on here, and many people still think that's too small for them to have normal behavior. I hope your LFS doesn't sell him to you.

I think a pygmy cherub angel would be sweet. But depending on which site you look, a 40B is marginal for this lively fish. Still a cool fish with an awesome personality!

I understand suggested tank sizes but I don't want a suggestion I want science. So if you or anyone else can't give my a scientific answer to what size fish can live in what size tank I'll use my own opinion.

While i agree that tank size recommendations are largely over rated and inaccurate in the saltwater trade, i don't think we agree on the reasons why.

The reason why i believe tank size recommendations are ridiculous is because IMO its really footprint that matters and not actual volume of the tank. With so many custom footprints out there, it is really hard to make a definitive statement about water volume recommendations.

For example, I have a 100g tank that has the same footprint of a standard 125, but it is shorter in height, thus reducing the tank volume. Would fish recognize the difference in volume from my tank to a 125? The answer is No. That additional height added to volume on the 125 goes largely unused by livestock anyways.

I however don't agree with your premise that because there is no science behind recommendations that we should keep whatever we want based on personal opinion. Common sense comes into play here.

I personally think the tank size recommendations for most bristle tooth tangs is on the low end. IMO its because so many hobbyists want to squeeze a tang into their tanks, that tank size recommendations shrink to the bare minimum for Bristle tooth tangs.

Personally i believe in overstocking tanks, but i don't believe in forcing a fish into a tank footprint that will be uncomfortable. There is definitely a difference.

Locally there is a Tomini tang living in a 600g. He is the most active fish in the display. he shares space with a Red Sea sail fin tang, purple tang, Naso Tang, and i know there's one more tang, but i cant remember what it is for the life of me. Point is the Tomini is the most active fish in this display, and that Tomini really changed my opinion on tank dimension recommendations for bristle tooth tangs.

I have a 35 gal cube with a 12 gal sump. In the tank I have onyx/Picasso clowns (Amphiprion Percula) pair, yellow clown goby, tailspot blenny and a red firefish. If you want a wrasse, go with a smaller fairy like Lubbocks or Yellow Fin. They will be just fine in a 40B

^^ Tailspot Blennys are great. One of my top 5 fish. Although not really open water swimmers, mine is active and picks at rocks most the day swimming from hole to hole, then picking around each hole before moving to the next. The midas Blenny might take issue with one however.

A shrimp goby would be another great addition, though not open water swimmers.

If it were my 40b, I would get a mate for my snowflake clown, add a 6 line wrasse for activity/color/predator, and a shrimp goby/pistol shrimp pair for sand bed activity. I likely wouldn't risk a Tailspot with the midas in there.

Ok, here's some science for you. The experiment is, let's observe how a fish behaves when it has plenty of space.

Case 1: a pair of clown fish. Generally no matter the tank size, they will claim an area of about 20 gallons and stay there. 30 gallon tank would make sense here.

Case 2: a firefish. Barely moves at all most of the time. 10 gallon tank seems fine.

Case 3: a tang, any tang really. When given space, they swim. And swim. And swim some more. basically as far as they are able to. So what conclusions can we draw from this case?
