I would go as tall as possible. If you are running a sand bed that takes away a couple/few inches right there. If possible I would make it a little taller. I like the 36" depth.

I don't like taking a bath every time I'm working on the tank.

I like the 20" height because you get a larger cabinet under the tank and more horizontal swimming room for the fish. You will probably also mount your lights the same distance to the bottom of the tank giving you 2" more space over the top of the tank. Drawback is you will need more lighting to cover the extra 8".

You can't really go wrong with either tank and unless your arm length is under 22" I doubt you will regret either choice.

The 36" reference was to the depth of the tank...which equals the width. Not height. I really like the 36" width of the tank. It adds a lot of depth. I like a little taller tank and I think you should go as long as possible. You will be surprised how much the extra 8 inches will make just as how much difference the 2" in height will make.

Instead of everyone voicing their personal preferences (which probably have nothing to do with yours) why not tell us why you are only looking at these two specific sizes? That might help make the final answer more obvious.

I like the depth and height on either of those. height at 20-22 inches =easy to light
36 deep easy to aquascape. If you have room 8 inches longer is cool.

While the tanks are nearly the same volume what does the 80"'s do to the cost of the tank itself? How many extra led's and such( assuming here:dance:) would that 8"X36" add to the cost? Is 8" going to make that much difference in your fish choices? If it was me and I wanted to fit something aesthetically into an area I wouldn't want to push the limits of what would fit nicely into an area. The final reason I voted the 72" would be the extra 2" of growth room for SPS and such( assuming again :fun4:)

Easy for me - there's more to gain from the extra 8 inches of width than the 2 inches of depth. (But then, I have a 100g tank that's 6' long. I like long tanks.)

That is my thinking, I currently have a 48x30x20 tank and the 20" is perfect I think.

Ok guys, here is the final plan. See anything I should change?
