Help me make some changes to my system

I recently moved my 90 gal tank from the basement to an upstairs sun room. During the move, I rearranged all of the rock and corals as well as fabricated an entirely new filtration system.

I am not experienced at this in any way but it actually came out pretty well. Now, I want to make some changes.

1) I need to cool the tank. It hasn't been too hot this summer (YET), but i want to make sure that I'm ready for the heat. I plan to add a small chill and some fans. Suggestions?

2) I don't feel like this sytem flows enough water and I'm trying to figure out what the bottleneck is. Below I will explain how the systme works and what components I used. I will also talk about a few ideas I'm contimplating trying out. Let me know what you think.

3) I need to make some lighting changes. I currently run (2) 250w 10k DE bulbs with a built in moon light. They hang about 12-15 inches above teh water's surface to help keep heat out of the system. I plan to cut my hood in half and hinge it so that I can mount the (2) 55w PC's that I alreay have.

What 250w DE bulbs should I use? I am due for a change.

Is there a reason not to use the PC's of actinic light?

4) What would be my best use for the 2 tanks below? One should be some type of fuge with anle and maybe mangroves... while the other could be a frag tank ... or maybe something else?

See below.

----------------------- The Present System -----------------------

Ill start at the top. The tank is a 90 gal glass tank with a built in over flow. The 'teeth' are pretty close together and don't flow very well, so I knocked out a couple of them which helped so I don't think this is the issue with flow anymore.

I built a HGB which works quite well. Off the top of my head, I think the drain is 1" and the return is 3/4" ... but I could be wrong.

The water goes down the drain and splits into 2 pipes. One goes to the 'frag tank' while the other goes to the sump.

Water in the frag tank goes through a series of baffles and drains on the opposite side. I originally had 2 drains but the second interfered with the skimmer so I had to get rid of it. I plan to put something over the drain to keep things from getting though. Anyway, the water then drains into the sump.

The water from the second drain empties into a bubble tower which flows into a refuge. The fuge has (2) 2/4 drains which allows the water into the main part of the sump.

The main sump has probes, heater, and stuff like that in it. I take the water from the sump and push it through the skimmer where it returns back to the sump.

Fianlly water goes through a series of baffles and on to the final chamber where it is returned to the tank. The return pump has a ball valve which I keep a decent way closed so that the sump doesn't run dry.

So, thats the basics of the system. Now, where should I make my changes?

Also, if you need any more info or pics ... just let me know. I'd like to work on this sometime this weekend, so any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

For flow, I'd stick some powerheads at either end of the tank. I run two Vortech MP-40W's in my 125 and they've made a world of difference. Dead spots have been virtually eliminated and I get nice random flow throughout the tank.

For cooling, pick up some exhaust fans for the canopy. I've got two of the IceCap fans at either end of the canopy pulling air in. This forces the warmer air out the back of the canopy. The fans have a temp sensor that regulates the speed; higher speed for more air when temp goes up, lower speed when temps cool down.

Can't really give a recommendation for DE lights but I run metal halides and actinic VHO's at the same time. I run both sets on a timer so that the VHO's come on early in the morning and stay on till late in the evening. The metal halides kick in mid-morning and run into the evening. It's worked well for me.

Get the flow and cooling problem solved then work on your sump.
