Help my chromis please - Pic

Hello,

We've had this Chromis in QT along with two others for about 2.5 weeks. A few days ago we noticed a whitish spot on his head about 1.5 - 2mm in diameter. I initially thought it might be Ich and began treating with hypo although until today he has been active and seemed to be eating and didn't really show any obvious signs of distress.

In the last day or two, however, he has slowed down considerably (enough to finally get pics) and he ate today but wasn't very active at eating like the other two. His movement is slow and now that I got a better look he appears to be quite skinny compared to the others. :(

The spot on his head now appears to be smaller but has a pinkish ring around it - see pics. The total wound is about 2-2.5mm in diameter and the white spot is about .75-1mm right in the center. You can also see in the 4th pic that it does appear to protrude form the surface of his body. The other two fish are healthy and unaffected - so far.

All three fish are in QT now and have been since I brought them home from the store.
QT=20L with 250gph HOB
Params:
NH3/NH4=0
NO2=0
NO3=0
Temp=80f
SG=1.010 (hypo) 1.026 (before hypo)

Is this Ich or something else? If something else, what can I do to treat it?

From what i know alot of the chromis are caught using chemicals, sometimes if they get to much of it in there system, sadly, they basically get eating alive starting inside. Of course it could be something completely different but thats just a thought.

Ok, my friend has some medication for his FW tank that contains nitrofurazone but it doesn't say whether or not it's safe for a marine tank. Here are the ingredients - can you tell me if this is safe to use?

Sodium Chloride (salt - yes I know this one is safe)
Nitrofurazone (obvious)
Furazolidone (Safe?)
Potassium dichromate (Safe?)

Also for reference it's a bright yellow crystaline powder.

Thanks again!

Its a Chromis let it die and buy a new one.

not worth the effort

Well, these fish are eventually going to go into the main tank. I won't be terribly hurt if I lose this one fish but the fact of the matter is that the pathogen could infect the other chromis and/or get into the main tank. I would rather kill it off and know my fish aren't carrying pathogens into my display. Isn't that why we QT? So that we can observe and treat any illness/injury before introducing the specimen to the display tank.

Just because it's a chromis, doesn't mean it's disposable.

That has got to be the worst comment i have seen on this board in awhile. They are living things and we have taken them out of there natural homes and placed them in little cubes. We are responsible to do everything we can for them. And if that is not the way you look at it then you shouldn't have them.

Unbelievable:eek:

Hanson - thanks for the support. Your reponse was quite diplomatic.

Regrettably, the chromis died yesterday. I inspected it close with an eye loupe and couldn't find anything other than the ulcer on its head. The gills looked great, the eyes looked great, the skin looked great.

The other two fish are still fine and dandy.

I suspect that I simply didn't start antibiotics soon enough.

And you know sometimes these things happen. The point of everything is that you tried and didn't just flush it...Grrr that makes me so mad...lol
As long as the others are okay than i would suspect you are okay. That little one maybe was just to weak to fight it off or we couldn't figure out what the problem was before it was to late:( I would honestly say after looking at the pics(which i couldn't see before for some reason)
That it looks like a bacterial infection. When i fist got mine i put them in the quarintine tank and i had the littlest one look just like that. Although his were bigger red marks. I treated with maracyn i think and he made a recovery. Although it took about 6 weeks for the red mark to disappear. But he was skinny like that and after a few days he beagan to eat really we'll. He is still the runt of the litter though...:)

Good luck
Lisa
