I've seen mine do this as well, but I'm not really sure what it's doing?

My instincts tell me that it's digestive related, but I have also heard of similar creatures inflating themselves in an attempt to relocate.

Do you have it in a "flow-happy" place?

This would be my guess as well. When they swell up like they're almost using their tissue as a sail to propel them. It's much easier to ride the currents now, as opposed to just sitting on the sand bed flat as a tire. My Heliofungia corals would do this on occasion as well. I would always put them back in the same spot, but it was almost as if they glided across the bottom in this state.

So Cloak, do you think that this is an "unhappy where it's at" thing or just a "I want to go cruising around and see what's over there" kind of thing?

It only seems to do it for very brief moments, and then it extends back out. Mine never actually moves anywhere, but it has a pretty substantial base on it.

Maybe a combination of the two? Food might have something to do with it as well.

Some corals like favids inflate themselves to dislodge sand and other debris from their tissue as well.

Well the base normally inflates daily but has polyps extended. May something crawled over it and it only retracted the polyps.

In the case of the above photo, I believe this is what was going on. Right after I snapped the pic, I noticed there was a shed Cleaner Shrimp exoskeleton be-bopping around down there (you can see it in the photo). I bet it found its way over to the Flower Pot and got stuck in its extensions.

Who knows.
