Help pick RO/DI.

Hey guys, I've been researching RO/DI's this week, and I'm ready to purchase one. Just want a few opinions on the two I have narrowed it down to. Both are from Bulk Reef Supply. I plan on using this for my 20 gallon Nano, and my 150 gallon FOWLR. These are the two I have in mind, and I just want opinions on which one to get, and maybe some insight as to why one is better then the other?

4 Stage unit
5 Stage unit

Which ever one I order, I'll be ordering a dual inline TDS meter, the membrane flush kit, check valve, float valve, and inline pressure gauge.

So which route should I go? I am on a budget, but the 5 stage isn't that much more then the 4 stage, so either of these units fit my budget.

Thanks,

either one will work just fine but IMO I would go with the 5 stage, the reason being is the more prefilters (cheap replacement) you have the more it will save your membrane (more spendy) by capturing the junk before reaching it. (at least that is how I see it anyway)

also you will want to know if your water supply has chlorimines in it, if you order the filters specfic for that.

I bought the 5 stage w/ tds meter and flush, pretty much everything you mentioned. I have been using it for 2 weeks. The tds meter is showing 0 tds going into the di filter and 0 going into my rubbermaid. I'm very pleased so far. I have a 75 gal tank w/ a 30 gal sump. I felt that it was a great value and I always a supply of Rodin and saltwater ready. I agree w/ the other post that you need to check w/ your town to see if they use chlorimines. That is a different system. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. Because its Sunday, there is no one at the water treament facility here in town. Although some google searching leads me to believe that chloramine is used in my towns water. Which RO-DI would I need to fight off chloramine?

Thanks,

Ok Thank you for the suggestion. I think I'll get the plus version of the one you suggeted. It's $10 more then I was going to spend on a regular ro/di withtheflush kit and tds meter. I'm going to call the plant tomorrow and make sure before I order.

Thanks guys.

So, just for the heck of it I was playing around at BRS, and I chose to build my own RO unit. Here is what I came up with;

Stage 1: 1 Micron Sediment Filter
Stage 2: 1 Micron Carbon Block
Stage 3: Chlorplus 1 Micron Carbon Block
Stage 4 (membrane): 75 GPD
Stage 5 (own Bracket): Single DI

Accessories:
Dual TDS Meter
Auto Shutoff valve
Float Valve
Flush Kit
Chrome kitchen Faucet diverter

This would cost me $202.90 shipped. How does this look to you guys? Do I need a regular Carbon block, if I use the Chlorplus carbon block? Do I need/want everything to be 1 micron? If I use a chlorplus filter and my town doesn't use chloramine, will this RO setup I've chosen still produce good water for my tank (basically I would rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it)? I don't know what my current water pressure is. I've been told the town is supposed to be 35psi, but I haven't confirmed this for myself yet.

Please advice on which filters to run, and the order...? I know nothing about this stuff, I just want to best water I can get for my budget ($200ish)

Thanks again,

from what I read you do want the 2 carbon blocks as the 1st one sperates the chlormines and the 2nd one catches it.

everything on your list looks very good though, I would order a couple extra sediment filters as they are cheap and get dirty fast. and other than knowing what your pressure is (your want around 65psi for best performance) I would stick to what you have on the list.

the way I would run the filters is the way you have it listed at the top.

you can also add a T with a ball valve after the ro and before the DI to get great drinking water but thats up to you.

either one will work, the 1 micron will need replaceing more often but let less stuff pass and save the other filters more.

Those of you running the 5 stage 75gpd kit, does it come with a pressure gauge built into the unit? Some pics on the site show them, while others do not...?

Thanks,

For $199 I bought a 5 stage 75GPD RO/DI from The Filter Guys. They're an RC sponsor and have great service. The one I got was the OCEAN REEF + 1 FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI And includes:
Stage One NSF rated 5 micron poly sediment filter
Stage Two 5 Micron Matrikx NSF rated CTO Workhorse carbon block
Stage Three 0.6 Micron Matrikx NSF rated chlorine guzzler carbon block
RO membrane 75 GPD Dow Filmtec
Stage Five refillable cartridge with color-changing DI resin
100 PSI pressure gauge
Auto shut-off (Requires Float Valve or Switch To Work)
Membrane flush valve
Dual TDS meter
Quick connect fittings
Self Piercing Saddle Valve Water Supply Connection
Drain Connection
Filter wrench to make cartridge replacement easy
