Where do I get one of these locally(Brooklyn, NY or around). Anyone around has used one willing to sell???? These things are not that expensive but the freight kills it completely. I would like to have the ability to either pick it up or have it locally delivered.

I need it rather urgently. Thank you.

Are you looking for a temporary storage location for LR? or as a permanent sump?

Do those things have an official name?

Try Trade Fair Hardware, a little bit of a hike from Brooklyn but usually has items like this in stock.

147 Sunrise Hwy
Amityville, NY 11701
(631) 842-5020

You may also want to try one of the Rubbermaid stock tanks, got mine at Agway in Hicksville.

That's where I was heading with my questions. Unfortunately, the Agway in Hicksville is long gone. And I wish I knew of a good replacement because I want another stock tank and more pickling lime.

Those square bins look interesting but I've never seen them before.

I just called Agway, got an answering machine but said the store was still there and the hours; perhaps re-opened under new ownership?

**update**
after listening to the message it hit me the old address was on W. John, the new address is 150 Duffy.

That would be awesome! I will drive by asap.

I called trade fair and they don't have it in stock. They have other tubs/bins in stock thou. Guy is supposed to call me later on with a quote because he can get them ordered. He said, they get overstock and 2nds (minor blemishes) at great savings but there are none in stock right now. I'll post when I get an update.

Anyone else???

I got a call from Trade Fair Hardware and boy these guys are expensive. He told me those bins in 2nds (mild imperfections) were $400. The product if ordered would be 600-650 the person said. Are they out of their mind?

head over to fulton fish market, we used to use similiar to ship fish from montauk to nyc for sale.

Do they sell them there???

not as a business, but they might have some extras cheaper than usual.

Problem is, as you see above they are not cheap. They are made to be hauled by forklift, stacked, and keep ice from melting. Thats not easy to do, and they are VERY expensive (but worth it if you ship fish for a living)

If you're looking for something cheap, I'd look for something else.

What's the intended purpose? I have used rubbermade stock tanks for all kinds of stuff, they are good and solid and cheap. Also, used glass tanks are usually less than $1/gallon - thats hard to beat. Lastly, the 55 plastic drums seem to be pretty available for $30-50 used.

I am looking to build "saltwater livestock" holding setup. The smaller ones at 42*29*28 hold roughly 150 gallons. Two of those would give me about 250 gallons of actual volume. I would use it to hold/quarantine fish, inverts, LR. Later possibly for fragging.

The cheapest I found them is $160 per bin which is quite decent. It is the freight that kills the deal. I need two of them for myself but 3 can be shipped per pallet. If another soul would be interested in these great containers, we can than split the shipping so that each one would be about $300 shipped to Brooklyn, NY. If there is more interest, one could even travel to Altoon, PA to pick a bunch of them up and then the price would drop to about $200-220 a piece in quantity. The reason I wouldn't want to use Rubbermaid for my project is because they are black. You can't see what's in it if you know what I mean.

We'll see.

gotcha.

well, there are LOTS of us in this hobby who have played around with growing out stuff for resale.

Probably noone has published more on it than Anthony Calfo. If you don't have his book on propagation, you really should get it.

That being said, from my experience and others, you wouldnt want things like above for a variety of reasons.

1) they are too large for QT
2) They are too deep for corals
3) they'd be fine for liverock, but there are many cheaper ways to do that.
4) They look impossible to add bulkheads to.
5) They are very expensive
6) Darker tanks with rounded edges may actually be better for getting fish acclimated.

And thats just quickly off the top of my head.

I've never done any fish farming/resale so I don't have any experience. I did prop BTAs for awhile and have grown out corals with the goal of making electricity money. Each was much harder than I anticipated and I made lots of mistakes in setup.

Read ANthony's book and ask around for guys/girls who are doing EXACTLY what you hope to do. That would be my advice. There isnt much margin in that biz.

Each is a valid point, to some degree of course.

I should have been more specific I guess. I am not looking to propagate corals for resale, just for fun/trading. If I wanted to go commercial I would just do the same setup altisreef.com has (seen it first hand). As for aclimating the fish, you are right, black would make them more comfortable. I was thinking white for light reflactance and so that I can actually see what is swimming it in. Besides if I really wanted a different color they do come in 3 different colors (white, black and gray) One will say, why don't you just get some glass tanks and my answer is....I don't need any more tanks, I don't need displays, I need storage. I am looking for no frills (but clean) setup that could just sit on the floor. I don't want stands so a glass tank would not be feasable as one would easily kick and crack it. These are heavy duty plastic (FDA approved for food storage) that you can just leave on the floor and easily access anything from the top. As to working with bulkeads, its easier than you think. These are the same type of bins that a lot of retailers/wholesalers use for their setup, I've seen multiple bulkheads installed along the perimeter.

As far as corals and light are concerned the depth could be easily dealt with. Frags can be easily set on an egg crate shelf say 10" from the water surface. The extra volume is always better and that goes for any system. They are 42*29*28, so if they are not in use they could easily be moved, stored out of sight. For now (next 6-9 months) I will use them to store my whole reef setup (135 gallon tank) until I setup new 180 in my new appartment. Then I will use it as Q/T for additional live rock and then I'll probably start moving my freshwater to a smaller home.

As of this post I actually found them even cheaper ($118 per gray) with $119 shipping for 3, so we'll see which route I go.

Thanks for your input jnfallon and all.
