ok i have/had and purple serpent starfish. i over feed my tank killed a bunch of stuff........ext ext long story. but anyways. my starfish just kinda disolved away( you know how they do when they die).

the question is there is one leg left with no body attached to it. the weird thing is that it responds to food. will this leg respawn into a starfish? what do i need to do to take care of it? its just a leg that grabs food and then lets it go because there isnt anywhere to put it.

sorry so long this is just weird.

This is the leg of a serpent star or a starfish starfish? If it's a serpent star the leg without a body will only survive until it runs out of energy. It won't regenerate anything. The same is true for most true stars. The stars identified as Linckia are some of the exceptions. They can grow entire new stars from just part of a leg assuming the original star was healthy.

yes this is the leg of a serpent star. but its been a week and it still responds.

It's not unusual for them to last that long. The minimum for serpents to regenerate from though is part of the disk plus at least a good part of 3 legs. It's safe to go ahead and ditch it unless of course you just like to watch it.
