Hey guys,
I just started a new 90 gal reef, any suggestions on stocking?
Also, please post some pics of your live rock set ups, i need inspiration!

Cheers:thumbsup:

Probably better to tell us what YOU want and then we can give you answers as to whether or not it will work for you.

Also, we need more information anyways such as your lighting setup, powerheads, tank age and general overall information so we can know a little bit more about your situation.

I reckon you should stock it with some fish, and maybe some corals. But hey, some say I'm just plain crazy.

Hey,
sorry forgot to give information. The tank is about 2 months old. 3x 250watt 14k metal halides, 2x 6000 litre/h powerheads, bm nac7 cone skimmer. I really wanted some reef safe wrasses and maybe a trigger in there. I heard the pinktail trigger is relatively reef safe. Furthermore i'd love some tangs and maybe an angel. I just can't get to making a compatible list.
Thanks!:lol2:

You could probably get away with a Kole Tang due to their small size. However, any other tang would be just too big for a 90g tank. Sure some people have yellow tangs and what not in the same size or smaller tanks but doesn't mean it is the right thing to do.

You could do a wrasse too. What kind of substrate do you have? Do you have a canopy? Gobies are good fish provided they can't jump out and do a great job at cleaning the sand. Although some people say they do too good of a job and create sand storms in your tank.

Considering your tank is only 2 months old I'd hold off on any SPS corals for sure. Same with anemones/clams. Gotta give your tank some time to mature. You could always slowly add in some softies/LPS corals to get some movement in there.

Usually the first thing that people throw in their tanks are clownfish (percula/oscellaris).

Do you have any certain corals in mind that you want to eventually have?

I don't have a canopy and I use coral sand as substrate. I was looking at gettin sps corals in the future, but i'll stick to lps for now. Do you know of any slow growing lps, not something that will cover a whole rock in two months? Oh an i'm guessing any trigger will also be too big for my tank?
Thanks

Yeah any trigger will be way too big for a 90g plus they aren't really reef safe.

As far as corals, most people don't want slow growing ;) I really don't know of any slow growing LPS offhand as I'm still learning things myself so somebody else will have to chime in with that.

Do you have any pics of your tank? Also, do you know if it is cycled for sure? Have any numbers for water parameters? Nitrate/Nitrite/Ammonia/Phosphate

Hahah yes i know, i just want space for my sps ;). When i'm browsing this forum, in basically every 90 gal reef journal, i see yellow tangs as well as blue tangs xD.

True, still doesn't mean it is the right thing to do but to each their own.

Sure, people can exist and live in a 8'x10' concrete box (prison) doesn't mean that they will be happy. They merely exist instead of thrive.

Most people tend to use the excuse that they buy the tangs small and that they plan to upgrade in a year anyways, which realistically never happens.

That's right. I'm really going to be focusing on the corals anyway. You said that gobies keep the subtrate really clean but jump out. I can cover the top of the tank with some kind of net (which i have a 4x4 square of). Which goby would you recommend?

A Diamond Watchman or Pink Spotted Watchman are good ones. Though this isn't something you should go out and buy tomorrow or anytime soon. I'd give your tank another few months to get some life established in the sand bed.

How deep is your sand? At least 1-2" should be adequate for the goby.

Plus you'll need a cover. Check out the DIY Screen Top video at BRS http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/

P.S. No you cannot get a mandarin goby! Your tank is not even close to being ready to be able to properly support one.
