HELP Top Off Reservoir ?

I know this is the forum to get some help from.
I'm helping someone set up a top off system for one of his tanks since I no longer have mine. The question is what do most of you use as the reservoir tank for top off systems. Mine will need to have a 1/4" hole for a valve to lead to the kalkwasser reactor system that will be added with the fresh water into a 100 gallon rubbermaid refugium. The refugium already has the float added to the tank, the lead line from the Kalk unit snaps right in. The top off water is R/O but will not be added automatically to the resevoir. We are trying to cut down from daily top off to only weekly or so...this will be an acopora tank and will also have ozone and a calcium reactor...we are trying to keep the levels as stable as possible.

Any suggestions as where to get a reasonably priced 30 or so gallon acrylic tank would be appreciated. Thanks

That is what I'm trying to avoid. The resevoir will be holding RO/DI water and will be connected via tubing to the 100 gallon refugium thru the Kalkwasser reactor. I'm just looking for something I can drill to hold the fresh water, instead of schleping buckets daily I can fill the resevoir once a week. Will keep the salinity very stable...thanks

I use 44gal Brute trash containers. Heavy duty, can be easily drilled & mount a small float valve inside. I also keep my kalk reactor inside.

i see. i simply use a rubbermaid hard plastic container. i have my ballvalve about 3-4in from the top of the container. and it will hold about 12gallons of ro. and it takes my 75gpd ro about 4-5 hrs to fill up when emptied. this is a simple cheap storage bin sold at meijer or walmart. it is a harder plastic that doesnt flex much like some do. if you want something bigger you can always swap out. this can give you something to start with till you find exactly what will work best for you. and the 12gallons that are readily available are plenty for top off.

Here is a picture of the setup.

I'm confused. You want to fill an RO/DI reservoir and then do what weekly? Replenish it after the kalk reactor has drained it? Why not put your RO solenoid on a timer and fill the reservoir daily?

This is all more complicated than it has to be though, IMO. If you are going to have a large reservoir anyway, why not just make that the kalk reservoir, top off the system from that, and refill it directly from the RO filter, either daily or weekly as you prefer? Dump in fresh kalk once a month.

That's how I, and RHF, and others do it.

The tank I'm looking for will hold RO/DI water to top off the main tank, the kalk reactor will be fed by gravity by being between the tank of top off water and the refugium, the kalk water/ top off water will be pump from the refugium to the main tank, 210 gallons. The actual RO/DI unit is in another room with a 120 gallon poly holding tank. I'm just looking for something that won't leak, old acrylic tank or recommendations for a container that will fit under the 210 in a stand and not leak when drilled to put a 1/4" fitting in it to connect to the kalk reactor. Thanks

carp...only if I want to run about 60 feet of line from where the RO/DI is processed and where the main tank is located...;0) straight down the middle of a doctors office. Yeah...I was considering doing all kalk...if that seems to be the way to go I'll give it a try.

Joel, must have been lots of good thoughts out there....MUCH IMPROVED and only getting better. Thanks
