Can someone help ID this algae? Just started growing in my tank the last few days. Any help is much appreciated.

Does cyano have the hair like features as well?

it can... i'm going through a few patches myself... most will tell you increase or check your flow. Cyano doesn't like flow... and check your water params... doesn't like clean water either.... you can syphon during a water change, or scrub with a tooth brush off your rock while syphoning to collect spores. You can lower your light schedule, or shut down altogether for 48-72 hrs and repeat a month later until the problem goes away..... there are chemical solutions but i'd try some of the above first.... I'm new too and this is what i've read and been told so far.

Good luck

Red Cyano, it's an ugly part of most new tanks becoming established. If it bothers you Chemiclean seems to knock it out in a few days for me.

Its cyano a bacteria not an algae..

As stated a good siphon then 3 day lights out then siphon up whats left may be all it takes..
Corals/Fish can take that without issue..
There is also a product called Red Slime Remover (and others) that may be used if you want to go to a chemical solution.
I'd suggest starting with the siphon/lights out and see how that works.. Many times thats all you need..

Cyano does seem to come and go in many tanks even with very clean (low nutrient) water. I get a patch or 2 now and then (mostly in the winter actually)..
I just siphon it out when I do water changes and its not an issue..

Its actually a bacteria responsible for life on Earth so I tend to let it do its thing then clean up after it..

Thanks for the information. I didn't think it was Cyano because I had never seen it so hair like before. I'll try the lights out and siphon for a few days.

You said the corals will be fine though? I have 2 clowns in the tank that I know will be fine but want to make sure that my corals and BTA will be safe as well.

Chemiclean is the chemical treatment, not permanent. I have used it twice in a year. Most recently this past weekend. The other suggestions are a good start but if they don't pan out you might wanna look into it. On the positive it doesn't look like its that bad for you at the moment.

I have a semi new tank with the same small patch, during water changes I take the small end of the water change tube and suck it right off the rock

For what it's worth..like I said I'm having a similar issue.. I did one scrub/syphon and maintain good water as far as nitrates and phosphates are concerned... and it seems to be taking care of itself at the moment... I was about to do another syphon and start lights out but it's receding on its own... don't do anything drastic. .. try one thing and see how it responds. Just my .02

I appreciate it that. I siphoned it out last night and will monitor it the next few days and see what happens.

My water is pretty clean 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, 5-10 Nitrates. Hopefully what I did last night knocks it out.

Thank you everyone for the advice!
