Hello! I've been raising a pretty hitchhiker corallimorph for about a year. We thought it might be a Corynactis californica "strawberry anemone", so we named it Shortcake. Now Shortcake has reproduced! We have a teeny tiny new one, which we've named Babycakes.
So I went looking for info on how to care for a baby C. californica... and I found a piece of info I somehow missed before: apparently that species is unlikely to survive in reef tank temperatures. So what species are mine then? Shortcake opens up when the tank gets dark at night... but also in the daytime sometimes too, so it's not entirely nocturnal. Please take a look at the photos I've included. What species do you think it is?
I moved Babycakes onto its own frag plug, and put it in a small container of reef tank water that we change daily (no temperature control - I'm just letting the tank water cool to room temperature). I was feeding it tiny pieces of frozen fish food (the same stuff we feed to Shortcake and our clowns), but when I did that, Babycakes was holding tight to the food and not attaching to the plug. It was hard to change Babycakes' food, and I was worried the food would eventually rot and poison Babycakes. So I started feeding it reef roids instead. I hope it's eating them - Babycakes is so small, it's hard to tell!
What do you think? Any tips on how to raise a baby... whatever species this is?
