help with macro in main tank

i purchased a few clumps of macro ( unknown sp.? ) without roots. I would like to place them in my main tank as I like the looks of planted tanks. Will most macro's root on sand and live rock or must they be placed on the sand to develop roots? Thanks.

some grow holdfasts, some dont. You'll need to know what you have before anyone can tell you how it will grow. If it grows holdfasts it will probably grow in the sand and/or on the rocks without problem.

Thanks for your help. Holdfasts? Like roots? The LFS i purchased it from doesn't have a clue so I don't think I will be able to I.D. it. I looked around various websites without luck. ( too many species). At any rate, shall I just stick it in a hole in the rock? If no "holdfasts" how does it anchor? Thank you.

At least describe what color it is and what object it reminds you of.

Some macros are not meant to be held down, and won't do well if forced to do so.
