Help with Red slime algae

I noticed today I have a few small patches on a few pieces of rock.

Can anyone give me some solid pointers on how to stop it before it spreads?

I read a little bit about increased flow, removal of waste by water change, keeping ph at around 8.3, anything else?

I saw some things about killing the lights but what is a good way of doing this without harming my corals?

Appreciate it guys.

How old are your bulbs. I had red slime in the center of my tank under a bulb that was one of the cheaper brands (had to try them at least once). Anyway when I realized that was the only place I had it I changed the bulb and it was gone within 48hrs.

Wonder if thats it? One of my white bulbs broke and I popped a used one in about 2 months ago. I was told it had 4 months left but who knows if I was getting strung along. The red slime is pretty much right underneath that bulb too.

I will give that a shot.

I used the red slime remover about 4 days ago. After the second day, it appears to be gone. I was told that no water change was needed, but I did my weekly change yesterday anyway.

Cut your light cycle to 4 hrs a day for 3-4 days and suction what you can see. Worked for me, and chemical free!

Yea don't use red slime remover for just a small patch of it, Jon. Try the other suggestions first IMO.

i had some and it and it wass towards the end of the life cycle of my bulbs. I put in new bulbs about a week ago and it has been going away as fast as it came!

Ive been struggling with it for the past few months myself. I've had my lights on for only 6hrs, new bulbs, carbon, gfo, and it has only slightly reduced it.

This stuff is the plague to reef tanks.

im telling you guys just do a lot of water changes and use redslime remover and make sure the skimmer is off the stuff doesthe job!

Aaron...as helpful as you're trying to be, that's not the best advice. There are many variables that add to the growth of "red slime algae."

I would suggest doing some of the other things before adding that product.

coming from past experience. it worked best for me just turned off the skimmer and did 5-10gallon water changes daily and it was gone within a week and i had it bad in the 75. no turning the light off crap of anything else messing up schedules within the tank. just jump to the point. i understand if its a little just do a vaccum on that area but if it worsens address the problem full on to stop it early. ot trying to sound mean ik what u mean dude but trying to help lol

Increasing your flow, siphoning any visible red slime up with a thin tube, and doing daily water changes should help solve your issue. Give your sand bed a good cleaning too. It probably wouldn't hurt to change your light bulbs.

When my bf's tank as well as our frag tank had it, a good tank sand bed cleaning with a water change and sucking up any red slime daily helped get rid of the red slime in no time! And it hasn't come back

I'd hold off on the redslime remover unless all of the other suggestions don't work. You'll definitely have to adjust your skimmer when you use it because it causes the skimmer to produce a TON of wet skimmate.

Short and sweet article that basically agrees with what most people said above.

Good luck!
