Ok I need some help I am getting the sb-800 flash for my d80 today
and would like some advise. Like were to set the flash in relation to my
camera and tank.
Here is a little drawing I made of what I thought would be best or if another position would be better.

Any advise would be appreciated
Thanks

I would just have the camera in contact with the glass to avoid flare from the flash. I also had good results with the flash on camera and angled up and to the right or left. Also consider the effect you are looking for do you want light to appear as coming from the side? Guess not. It might be useful to raise your flash up and have an effect of flash coming from up and from any side depending on the shadows appearing in the stone crevices or on your subject. the direction of the fish would be important as you wouldn't it to be lit from the tail side and shadows falling on it's face...

Actually, I have heard of some folks who had placed the flash above the tank pointing down over an opening at the top. Not sure how well this would work but it would put more of the light into the tank versus bouncing off the glass.

Others have used the side-light technique.
