help with sps

I got a 40g 13"high. The Poccilipora is 9 inches from the suface and I have 260watts of pc 6"above the water. the back half of the Poccilipora is retracted and white. the back half is facing more upward and at the light. I am asking because I have gotten 3 very differant answers from lots of people... when I ask people what type of stuff I can keep I get (answer 1) you have alot of light and will be able to keep anything I want...(answer 2) you do not have MH and will be able to keep softies, lps, and maybe some sps... (answer 3) you will bleach alot of the less light demanding corals because you have so much light... Do I move it closer to the light, or shaded under a rock, or is it somethig else in my tank? help me please

p.s. I got the frag at night and never realy inspected it, It could have had the white side before I put it in my tank, but i di think it is looking worse by the day, although it could just be my nervousness/exitement about my first hard coral.

I will make the light question easy

Florescent, fresh water tanks
Power compact, fresh water, salt water fish only tanks, may be enough for some corals to survive.
T5's shallow reef tanks, limited corals mostly softies and lps's
Metal Halide, reef tanks, sps's

Now, the lights are just one of several components to be able to keep an SPS's the others are strong random flow, water chemistry stability, temperature control, protein skimming and good biological filtration.

Actually, I think that T-5's on a tank of your size would be adequate to keep sps. I tried many times under different pc fixtures to keep sps, but ended up only being able to keep montipora caps. Now that I've switched to T-5's, I have a couple of Acro frags that are doing great...good color and plolyp extension. The benefit of halides from there is the intensity of the light and I have definitely seen the colors vary under them from what I see under my T-5's.

I think it may not be the wattage you have but the quality (ie: spectrum, etc.) of your lighting that may not be sufficient for sps.

Just my 2c...hope it helps!

thank you very much I think I will go with mh for the 75 I am setting up....the coral is "dead" now 7/10 of it is white

I run VHO which supposedly is what reefers used to keep all corals under till MH became popular.

I haven't used them yet myself, but the guys over at Eco-Reef swear by T-5s.
That is what they are changing all of their coral tanks out to if I heard them right last time I was there.

there should not be any need to go with MH for that tank...
But then again why not?

A man has two choices. A cheaper option and a better, more expensive option.

If he gets the more expensive, yet better option he will regret it today as he pays.
If he gets the cheaper option he will regret if every day.

I sold him my old PC setup from my 55, and i kept softies, and lps verry successfully for 2 years with alot of groth. I now have t-5's on my 90, with sps, and lps, and groth and color is good also. Halides are not required to have a successfull tank, and it has been proven over, and over. He has a 40 gallon tank, and should be able to keep almost any lps and softy under those lights. I know I kept the in a deeper tank with the exact same light for 2 years. I do agree though that it might have been to little for sps.

that is utter mad rubbish you're talking.

OF COURSE HALIDES ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP A REEF TANK ... IN A MATTER OF FACT, ACCORDING TO THE HALIDE BOYS ON THIS SITE ... FOR A FOWLER TANK YOU'D PROBBALY NEED HALIDES AS WELL ... BEST OF YOU GO WITH DUAL 400W + LUMINARCS! ON A 90G.
