help with starfish

ok, so I have a hand sized starfish, and a little one. The little one climbed on top of the bigger one, and the big one started to release all this white stuff....I thought they might be reproducing, but does anyone know how much white stuff should be released?? the little one left the big one alone some time ago, and its still, well, it looks like someone melted marshmallow all over it...do they release toxins? or is he sick? or is it just reproducing? Any info helpful....thanks
