Help, Xenia Out Of Control!!!

Xenia does not like temp swings. If you have a lot that you need to get rid of, check with the LFS to see if they want any perhaps they will credit you. Cut it as close to the base as possible with a sharp pair of scissors, then using some small rubble use a rubberband & tie the stocks to this, now you have just fragged Xenia! Now take a cup or so of tank RO water & heat it up hot. Using a syringe, carefully shoot the hot water on the stalks that are left on the rocks, this should kill the rest of the colony.
Works for me every time. But, do NOT do this all in one setting, you do not want to have a lot of decaying Xenia all at once.

Temps above 80 doesn't kill xenia. My tank runs around 80 and will go up as high as 83 my xenia isn't going wild but it definately hasn't died.

xenia will start to crash at 85 degrees... but something tells me fish wouldnt be to happy bout all that. You can try cutting it and using a wire brush to scrape it off your rocks, but i think the syringe with hot water would work best. if u cut it and put a small piece of rubble over the part that is stuck over the rock so it doesnt get any light would probablly also work... just a thought

Might wanna try using a syringe and injecting it with some hot Kalk paste. Thats how I got rid of some of my shrooms.

If you can... pull the rocks OUT of your tank. Xenia can put off some nasty stuff. If you can avoid cutting or tearing it off in your tank, IMO, you should. If you can't, put in fresh carbon to keep the allelopathic chemicals in check.

You can try to nudge the base or "foot" off the rock with a credit card, or your thumb nail. Then, reattach it to a frag plug, or just bag it.

You could try trading with local refers, or to your LFS.

*If you haven't had it out of your tank yet, into the open air... It smells REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BAD!

Best of luck, I had/have the same problem.

My tomatoe clown keeps my xenia under control. For some reason if the xenia is too close to his anemone he tears it apart so I only have xenia on one side of the tank now.

After you get it under control, use corals with a strong sting to surround the colony and keep it contained in that area. That always helped me. :)

You could try placing pieces of rubble rock and surrounding the xenia then when it grows onto the rocks trade the pieces in for store credit.

If I were you I would take some xenia encrusted rocks to an LFS and trade them. Some people (including me) really like the stuff.
