Hi guys currently in my tank i have a fairly high level of nitrate. i have done water changes etc but it wont go down. i have heard in the past that there is something that i can buy and put in the tank to help control these levels but i dont remember what it was called and i want to go to the fish store tonight and get it.. can someone please remind me what it is???

test the water that you are actually putting into the tank, make sure that you arnt "adding" the nitrates from the get-go. But you should be able to get some type of filter pad to suck nitrates out of the water, but they will only come back and you will be set back 15 bucks for the pad.

the water i use is pre made salt water and ro water when topping off the tank.. what kind of filter? and has anyone heard about what i am refereing to as far as the substance that you leave in the tank and controls the nitrates some?

There's also something called AZ-NO3 that you can buy at marine depot (I have never seen it at my LFSs). Its a coenzyme that will get rid of nitrate. Worked very well for me.

My local fish store has a big jar of little balls of nitrate reducer-- I have no idea what its called, but it claims to lower the level of nitrate in your tank in between water changes. It says you can prolong the time b/n changes b/c it helps to eliminate high levels of nitrate...and its reef and fish safe...the product looks like small balls of white powder...Sorry I can't remember the name, but if my LFS has it, I bet yours does too!

theres no need to add chemicals to your system when all its going to do is be a temporary fix! you need to find where your nitrates are coming from to stop them. things like to much food, not keeping the filtration system clean, etc.
