Is it fairly common to actually witness the hermits changing homes? I saw one do it tonight, very cool. But, he decided to move back to the old home after a few minutes...must not have liked the fit.
Yes, the hermits will switch shells when they outgrow their old ones. Make sure you have plenty of empty shells around for them to move into as they'll kill your snails and take the shells if they have to. I have recently noticed a couple of my hermits wearing "snail" shells. I doubt that the snails gave them up willingly.
Mine do it (trade shells) all the time. When I was on vacation in Myrtle beach last Feb I stocked up on shells from a local flea market. Most of them are in use now as my blue legs grow. I am actually looking for a local source for more.
Actually a very good question. Does anyone have a good source for a large batch of hermit houses? The LFSs here seem to ask $.25 to $.50 apiece. I think I want to buy by the pound.

HobbyLobby has shells cheap , I just bought a package of around 200 assorted shells there for 2 bucks. I am sure you local craft stores have the same thing
