Hermit crab question....

First let me start by stating that my wife has been raising "land" hermit crabs in a 55 gallon "dry" setup for 3 years now, so she is pretty good with knowing them.

This weekend her mother and father went to the Alabama coast and brought back some hermit crabs they caught in the water thinking they could put them in a "dry" setup like we have and they would survive.

We just recently decided to expand our menagerie from a 55 gall freshwater system, and a 55 gall hermit setup, to now include a 125 gall reef setup. My question is if there is any discernable way to determine an aquatic hermit crab from a non-aquatic hermit crab.

My wife is concerned that her mother is going to kill them due to their lack of knowledge, and wanted to know if we could put them in our new reef tank, and I told her that we needed to find out if they are aquatic or non-aquatic.

My next question would be, are all hermit crabs reef safe? Or are there bad crabs.

Thanks all.

Well, there is no intermidiate hermit crabs. They either live in water or they live on land. If they were found in water, then they live in water.

No, not all hermits are reef safe. There are some that are waaaay not reef safe. Proper identification is also rather difficult as well.
