hermit crabs

I was out on the ocean today-and was surprised at the fact that I was unable to find any hermit crabs on the small islands in the canal, shore, ect. though this was my first attempt to find new aquarium inhabitants in the wild i figured some of you may have some tips on where to find them. thanks!
