Hey Beerguy! 5D

Hey Doug, I guess I'm going to get a 5D. I was going to get two new 40D's. One for me and one for my GF. She's still getting the 40D, but I think I want that 5D. I know it lacks some features of the new Canon's and for that reason I suspect they will be coming out with a new one with improved AF, 14 bit Digi III, and sensor clean. But the 5D was always a great camera and doesn't become a bad one just because a newer one comes out. And I'm tired of waiting. Can't let the GF have a better camera than me.

Funny thang, I have a Canon pro-9000 printer and I'll be getting another because of the rebate. What to do with 2 printers? Maybe I'll pop for $200 more and get the 9500.

What do you think. The 24-105L kit. Nice bargain and IS. Or the 24-70L 2.8. Very Fast. Or how about a 1.4 50mm, 85mm 1.8, and a wide angle. All primes for about the same price? Although not L lenses thay are all very sharp. After all the 100mm macro is not an L lens and it kicks butt.

No kidding. I finally couldn't wait any longer. I ended up paying $2149 for mine.

Depends on what you shoot Mike. I've got the 24-70 but I'm considering trading it for a 24-105, mostly just because I've got a 30mm gap in my range right now. It's a tough choice. While I do most of my shooting on a tripod, well above 2.8 it's nice to be able to go there. Especially on a closeup shot. The bokah at 2.8 is like butta!

The price on the 24-105 kit makes it a steal. I've got a buddy with a 1Ds MII and that's the lens that he's got on about 90% of the time. If I didn't already have the 2.8 I'd have one myself.

My next acquisition is on the wide end. I sold my Tokina 12-24 since it's a crop body lens. I'm looking at the Canon 17-40 or the sigma 12-24. I just haven't figured out how to get it past the wife yet.

You got your 5D. Cool. Are you going to get the free printer? I have a Canon Pixma 9000 and it is really sweet. I just printed a picture for a girl in 13"x19" Ilford Pearl paper. Sweeeeet!

Let me know which way you go with the wide angle and tell me how it works for you.

Nah - I just bought an Epson R2400 earlier in the year. I prefer the pigment based ink and I've already got a Canon for the low end stuff. I suppose I could have got it to sell but I didn't feel like hassling with it.

I'll be ordering Monday I think. I've decided on the 50mm 1.4 for walk about and low light and a 17-40 f/4L for wide angle. With a full frame camera, I just can't pass up the 50mm 1.4. It's just too familiar and so great for any lighting condition. This pair costs the same as the 24-105 and the 24-70 and fits in nicer with the lenses we already have. Can't wait.

try the 50 1.2 or the 85 1.2(I have that on my camera 90% of the time).. oh and go with the the 24-70.. the 24-105 isn't a 2.8 and if you are going to buy nice glass always always get the fastest.

I've never used a full frame SLR. Is it true that the viewfinder is much larger and brighter than the 1.6x viewfinders? I find that is the biggest issue I have with my Canon Digital Rebel (5 years old).

The 50 1.2 does have problems, and I wouldnt spend the extra money buying it over the 50 1.4.

Having said that, I really liked the 50mm on a 1.6 crop camera. Very much like an 85mm on a full frame. I dont much like the 50 on a full frame. I find that its never wide enough or up close enough without getting on top of my subject.

I would get the 35 2.0, or if ya have the money, and one of Canons best lenses, the 35 1.4 (Moneywise, the 35 2.0 and 85 1.8 are an awesome combination)

Thats just my personal experience, ymmv.

As far as the 5d, I love mine but I made the mistake of selling my 20d. One major problem with the 5d, is the banding you get when using high ISO, and AI servo. Its quite awful really, and something Canon will never correct.
They have stated that it happens on only certain lenses, and those lenses can be sent in to correct the problem. At your cost unfortunately, but anyone who has used this combo will tell you, that you can pretty much get the banding on just about EVERY lens you try. Even on the "fixed" lenses, while its not as bad, it still rears its ugly head.

I miss being able to track my fish with AI servo, like I did on my 20d. I imagine the 5d mkII that should be announced in february, will not have the AI servo banding. For me its bad enough, to where I'll consider upgrading to the mkII (or whatever its called).

For everything else, the 5d for me is excellent. Its IQ is second to none with current slrs.

Its true, but dont expect miracles. I found using different focusing screens were of greater help. (On 20d, never tried on my digital rebel)
