First off, hello CIMA members! It's been a while since I have posted. I've been totally caught up in school, work, ...... life lately and haven't had time for as much RC as I used to. Unfortunately that also applies to my aquarium. But, I have spring break coming up and I have some aquarium related plans for that week.

I am planning on reverting back to a DSB, as long as a I can find an affordable way of doing it. I need 200lbs or so to be where I want to be. Does anyone know of any southdown in the area? Or better yet, is anyone planning on going barebottom and want someone to take their sand :) ? Any other ideas on where to get sand cheap/free?

Thanx for any help here.

Looks like the next meeting is nice and close to home. Hopefully I'll be seeing you guys there!

well, you can chalk that one up as a false lead. just called every home depot on that list and none of them have it.

it does seem in talking with these people, though, that this is something they get questions on a lot. lol even the peoria store said they have a lot of people asking about it.

Funny you should menion it. I was lookin for some earlier today too. All I can tell you is Menards and Lowes don't carry it here in Bloomington. Good luck and I would love to know if you find some. I am traveling to Omaha, Nebraska to see family next week, might check there. Bigger city might have better luck.

Zack... Check out the tradin post. There has been multiple occasions where I've seen a guy from Washington, IL who has Southdown sand. I called him once and he stated that he frequently travels south for work and he loads up on Southdown sand and brings it back to sell. If I can remember correctly I think he sells it for $5 a bag, but don't hold me to that price.

I have about 10 gallons worth sitting in my garage that is taking up space. If you are going to be at the peoria meeting I will bring it along. I had it in my tank for about 6 months before I had to take it down. This is the Southdown brand.

I use silica sand and always have, I have never had a problem with diatoms aside from the new phase that lasted about a week. It is very fine and is white, I get it at Menards for 2.50/bag 50lbs. The only downside is natural buffering, but I never have a problem with ph, as I drip kalk, and test water twice weekly, no big deal to throw in a little baking soda every once in a while. There are a lot of people using this sand with no bad effects, I thouroughly researched it before using it in a reef tank, the stuff from menards is extremely clean, hardly any dust at all. It is on an end cap by their concrete, white bag.

Hey Zak, nice to see you are still around. I thought maybe you had sold off your tank or something.

Just to add to what smorrow posted, I have also used the pure white silcia sand from menards on occasion. It is safe to use. But even though it is pure white out of the bag it once it is submerged it looks kindy dingy brownish white (to my eye anwyay) It doesn't look bad, but definitely not as bright white as southdown.

Has anybody heard of White Beach Sand by Gulf Coast? I can't seem to find any information on it? They have it at Walmart, It looks nice but I didn't know if it would be safe to use.

Thanx for the replies!

I looked in the tradin post and didn't see a thing. I'll check some more over the next week. Thanx for that info, derrick. If anyone has any other leads on this guy, please do tell!!

I think I'm gonna pass on the dead-live sand, Drew. I think that stuff will be full of organics ready to decay and cause problems. But I appreciate the offer!

Thanx for the info and reassurance on the silica sand. That will be the route I take if all others lead to dead ends by Tuesday. Looking forward to catching up at your next meeting, Dan!

Tracy - I think I'm gonna take a drive to Wal-mart to check that out right now! Sounds like it has potential! If you will be back from Omaha by Tuesday LMK. It seems like you might have luck there. I bet the Omaha Marine Society can tell you for sure, if you want to try to set something up before you go

One would think that after enough people bugged Home Depot, Lowes or Menards they would just buy a skid of it to see what happens. All of these calls should lead to $$ in their eyes.

What does everyone think about sand from the beach. We go to Florida every year, it is where my dad lives. The sand on St. Pete Beach is very white. I would assume that this is as natural as you could get. What would be the downfall to bringing this home and starting a tank with it?

they get it from the water,at least thats how they get it the bahamas, dont' think its legal to get it from shore..
