Hi just wondering if anybody struggles with constant brown algae problems ? I do all over my sand and rock it's died off by morning and is at it's worst late at night whilst feeding of the light I guess my tank is only 4 months old and I do regular water changes is this part of cycling or is it always going to be around phosphate levels is 0.25 ?

Welcome to the site first of all. The brown stuff is probably diatoms. Every new tank goes through an out break of them at one point it will stop growing. A few turbo snails will make short work of that stuff.

As for the phosphate you can do a few different things such as grow a macroalgae if you have a sump.

You could run a phosban reactor which will wipe it out.

A clean up crew will help control algae a lot so you may think about adding one if you don't have one. Good luck and have fun!

Hi thanks for the information, I have turbo snails 2 hermit grabs 2 emerald crabs and a shrimp snails don't ever really go on the sand though just the glass! Maybe I should look at getting a goby or 2 ? Also what is a phosban reactor :) ? And yes I have ro water in. A 25 litre contained with a auto top up system

Two snails is nothing and yes I would pick up some thing that would clean the sand there are snails and other things that will do so. As far as water you want to use RO/DI water if you are not doing so. Phosban will take po4 out of your fish tank water.

Welcome! Depending on tank size, I have had good luck running ChemiPur Blue in my tank. seems to keep the PO4 in check.

Hi new to forum

Sorry I was supposed to put a comma after shrimp, I always use rodi water and I have 10 turbo snails they never spend there time on the sand though

That is a lot of turbo snails for a tiny tank. See if you could trade them for some nassarius & trochus snails.

How much water are you changing how often? What is your lighting schedule?

Hi new to forum

Yeh I think there is currently 7 now because I found 3 empty shells my fire shrimp might of ate them, I do 10 percent water changes weekly, I have t5 x4 54 watts I think 2 moonlight 2 day lights they are also on a timer from 2pm till 11pm

I would suspect the hermit crabs before the shrimp.

I'd up the water changes a little & cut back on lighting. Do you have a skimmer?

Yeh I did have a tunze docline but now have an old school Red Sea Berlin but works absolutely great producing decent amounts skimmate

Welcome! The tank is still new and you are using RO/DI water! You my want to adjust your water flow......leaving no dead spots??

Flow seems great everything moving as it should should I keep my powerhead as high as possible pointing towards the sand as much as possible without causing a sandstorm or abit lower facing higher to keep water flow more on the surface ?
