I had a pair of mating High Finned Cardinals that were successful at producing babies. Each month dad would stop eating and show up with a mouth full of eggs. The eggs turned into wigglers and the babies would eventually be spit out. I would net as many as I could and put them in a breeder tank. Unfortunately, most all of the babies would die after one to three weeks (that's a question for another time). Exactly one of the babies has survived for four months, is about 3/4 of an inch long and is doing well.
Recently, the female Cardinal died for some unknown reason.
My question is this: Is the baby big enough and should I release it into the tank with everyone else? Will the dad accept the baby? Will he treat the baby differently if it is a male or female? If the baby is a female, what are the prospects of the two becoming a breeding pair again?
Thanks for any info.
